Our Story
Although I initially started out as a physics and chemistry major at the University of Michigan, I early on chose a career as a hairstylist as I had always been captivated by the ability of style, art, and beauty industry crafts to positively impact our daily confidence, sense of joy and fulfillment, as well as promote general wellbeing. This career gave me a chance to travel and work around the world and build a successful salon focused on personalized, meticulous practice of my craft centered around the needs of each individual client.
One downside of the tremendously fulfilling work as a hair stylist is having one’s hands continuously exposed to heat, water, chemicals, shampoos, conditioners and styling products on a daily basis. I have been touching, bending, smoothing, cutting, coloring, shampooing, conditioning, curling, styling and blow-drying every type of hair on the heads of thousands of clients for several rewarding decades.
About eight years ago I began experiencing autoimmune symptoms of chemical sensitivity and these symptoms were wearing my body down. The medical community’s consensus is that approximately 70% of autoimmune conditions are caused by environmental triggers. And autoimmune conditions are not uncommon among hairstylists.
With careful observation and product elimination, I pinpointed my main environmental trigger which was a hair conditioner I handled on a daily basis. When I used the product, I became symptomatic, not using the product, the symptoms subsided. This realization that the hair and skin care products we touch every day can make us sick or cause lingering sensitivities prompted me to further study the ingredients in the shampoo and conditioner I had been using daily for over a decade at home and in the salon.
I loved my craft and my art, and, if I wanted to continue working and stay healthy, some of the products I used needed changing. It was critical for me to find safe, effective products that could deliver professional results which my clients expected and healthfulness my body absolutely required.
For about two years I kept researching and trying, one by one, domestic and European brands which marketed themselves as non-toxic or safe for daily use. Through trial and error, I found that each product harbored some compromises either in effectiveness or in use of ingredients with inherent risks. Risks of immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, hormone disruption, and cancer. The use of added fragrances., incl. so called “natural” fragrances – ingredients of which manufacturers are not required to disclose – was pervasive, and chemical preservatives were almost impossible to avoid. Even in most products tagged as “clean”, “natural” and “organic” these harmful ingredients were prevalent. Particularly in anything manufactured at scale.

With the focus on safety, simplicity and wholesomeness, I started reviewing and testing plant-derived ingredients to learn their effects on skin, the immune system and their interactions with each other. Having a background in chemistry and physics from my undergraduate studies was particularly useful in achieving my goal of preserving the active properties of botanicals and understanding their synergistic abilities. Many trial batches were perfected over and over to eventually result in streamlined, simple, non-toxic, fragrance-free formulas free of harmful chemicals and preservatives. The novel, healthful way to formulate shampoo, conditioner and body wash was born.
These were the 3 products I was proud to use on myself and my family and excited to offer to my diverse and health-minded clientele. I didn’t have to worry anymore about autoimmune reactions and lingering chemical sensitivities. My clients loved having exclusive access to this unique, artisanal product line.
This was a true labor of love and a highlight of my career to create something that makes our daily life safer, healthier and more wholesome. And now I am proud to share these gentle, effective and healthful products with all of you!
